The Best Location For Your New Garden

The object of a successful vegetable garden is to eat the fruits of your labor. Anybody can garden like the pros and enjoy a huge harvest of tasty, fresh, nutritious vegetables throughout the year if they know the essentials of successful gardening. One of the most important factors is having a good location. A good location is one that receives direct sunlight all, or most of the day.

Sunlight provides the energy plants need to grow. Ideally, sunlight must not be obstructed at any time of the day. However, this is not always practical. Your property may be small or for some reason your garden needs to be close to the house or a large tree that you don't want to cut down.

If this is the case, choose a location south of the high objects if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. Or choose a location north of the high objects if you live in the Southern Hemisphere,
This way, high objects will not obstruct direct sunlight to any part of the garden at any time of the day.

If the site you choose for your garden is east or west of nearby high objects, you still can grow vegetables successfully. Determine which areas get more sunlight and which areas get less sunlight
during the course of the day. The shade from high objects moves continuously during the day, because of the earths rotation.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there is more to gardening than you might have first thought.

Plant the fruit-bearing vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and eggplants in the areas that get at least 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach in the areas that get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plant root crops such as potatoes, beets, and carrots in areas that get at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Place your garden at a respectable distance from large trees. In addition to obstructing direct sunlight, large trees deprive nearby vegetable plants of water and nutrients. This is because tree roots have a far greater reach compared to vegetable plant roots and, therefore, have more capacity to absorb the soils nutrients and water.

If you cannot locate your garden a reasonable distance from large trees, give the area that lies on top of tree roots extra fertilizers and water and raise the level of the ground over the tree roots by adding topsoil. This extra soil will provide the vegetable plant roots with a growing depth free of tree roots. If the trees are of the kind that develop shallow roots, like maples and cottonwood, you will have to add more topsoil every couple of years.

Most people position their garden in the backyard. In houses that have a small backyard, the garden may be positioned in the front. The surface of the ground should be flat or have a gentle slope. A gentle slope facing south (if you live in the Northern Hemisphere) increases the intensity of sunlight. This is more desirable for tender vegetables because they thrive in hot weather.

A gentle slope facing north (if you live in the Northern Hemisphere) reduces the intensity of sunlight. This is more desirable for hardy vegetables, because they thrive in cool weather.

If the surface is too steep, water from rain and irrigation will run off too quickly instead of seeping through the soil. Moreover, heavy rain will wash away the topsoil and the valuable nutrients
it contains. To absorb more rain and reduce soil wash, plant the rows across the slope. If your area is windy, you may have to plant some high shrubs around the garden. The shrubs should be about 15 feet from the boundary of the garden in order to prevent their roots from absorbing the nutrients the vegetable plants need.

Taking Care of Your Garden

Having a stellar looking garden does not come without a little work. Some people find it rather difficult to devote leisure time to their gardens and consequently their gardens suffer. With a little effort, however, the result could be drastically different. Perhaps most importantly one should consider gardening more of an enjoyable hobby and less of a duty that must be completed. Considering gardening to be work can frequently cause people to rush and not devote an adequate amount of attention to their gardens.

The primary task when gardening is to become familiar with the flora contained therein, for without knowing how to nurture specific plants, your garden may become rather messy and unkempt in appearance. Many plants require unique attention when it comes to pruning and watering, thus being conscious of your gardens needs is essential. The first thing one must consider is what plants to put into their garden. Possessing some knowledge of what types of plants grow well in your specific climate is necessary at this point, since one would not want to purchase seedlings for a plant that simply will not thrive in their garden. Knowing how to organize plants in the garden is vital also as taller plants can overshadow shorter ones and, in effect, eradicate them if not planted in a manner that benefits both plants. Along with knowing how to arrange flowers and plants within your garden it is also beneficial to choose a nutrient rich soil for them to blossom in.

While there are many methods you can choose from to help your garden flourish, composting is perhaps one of the best. Though it may take some work to initially set up, it has an abundance of benefits and if you are willing and able to care for your garden as is suggested, then you surely will not mind devoting some time to composting. Not only will composting increase the quantity of nutrients available to plants in your garden but it also helps to reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfill sites.

Butterfly Gardening for Beginners

I've been fascinated with insects since childhood and butterflies in particular with their metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis. While my childhood passion did not yield a career in Lepidoptera, I absolutely love it when a Swallowtail or Monarch comes fluttering through my flower garden. When a friend turned me on to butterfly gardening I decided I wanted to learn all about which plants butterflies use for nectar as well as which serve as host plants for the caterpillars.

A butterfly garden is a fantastic way to promote education and conservation of these winged beauties since increased urbanization is constantly infringing on butterfly habitats. A butterfly garden can come in any size or shape from a fully landscaped backyard, to a small balcony or patio to a window box. Planting the flowers adult butterflies rely on for nectar as well as the host plants the next generation of caterpillars will feed on quickly attracts large numbers of local butterflies. By alternating plants with various blooming cycles you can ensure vigorous butterfly activity year round.

Adult butterflies feed on sweet liquid, such as nectar from flowers. You can plant a variety of flowers to attract adult butterflies including petunias, alyssum, lobelia, cosmos, daylily, and rudbeckia daisies. Vines such as trumpet vine, wisteria or passion vine will quickly fill in and you may also consider shrubs such as hibiscus and butterfly bush.

A great way to jumpstart your butterfly traffic is to use a homemade feeder filled with sugar water. Mix 4 parts water to 1 part sugar, boil until the sugar is fully dissolved and then cool. Use something absorbant like paper towels to soak up the solution and put them in a shallow container on a post a few inches above your flowers. Another easy trick is to do the same with watermelon cuttings, but don't worry about keeping it fresh - they prefer it rotten.

Some butterflies can be observed on moist sand or mud gathering around puddles of water where they feed. The function of this "puddling" is not fully understood, they may be drinking the dissolved minerals, but maintaining a damp, salty area in your yard can be a useful method for attracting these butterflies. It can also be a good idea to put some rocks in your garden giving the butterflies a spot to bask in the morning sun and warm themselves.

Now, the caterpillars are much pickier eaters and most species will only survive on their own specific host plants. Monarch caterpillars, for example, can only live on milkweed plants while female swallowtails look for parsley, dill and fennel to lay their eggs.

Anyone can have success butterfly gardening, just research what butterflies live in your area and then fill your garden with the appropriate host plants and lots of nectar sources.

Lawn Care DIY

There are 3 main elements to consider when working on creating your perfect lawn. How you water, fertilize and mow your lawn will have vast effects of your lawns health. I'm not suggesting that you should go into a deep Zen meditation about it, but there are a few rules to follow.

1. Water to create a solid root foundation. Yes in order to get the top looking great you need to start with the bottom. Grass roots with proper care will grow to between 6 and 8 inches deep. You therefore need to water your lawn to allow the water to sink to this level. If you always water lightly you promote shallow roots. This means more watering as the grass dries out more quickly than if the roots were more established.

2. Correct fertilization is essential for healthy growth. All types of grass require a nitrogen feed at least once a year, if not more. This helps to keep the grass weed and disease free. I recommend you find a good fertilizer that contains some slow acting form of nitrogen such as ureaform, animal manures and milorganite and some quick release forms such as urea and ammonium nitrate. This gives the best results as your grass will respond quickly but the effects of this application should last for a couple of months. Always water before and after fertilizing so that you reduce the risk of burning your grass. Also use the rule of 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, so you need to work out how much nitrogen is in your chosen fertilizer and apply to that rule.

3. For the best looking lawn use these mowing tips. Keep your mower blades sharp! You will end up with a browned out lawn the day after mowing with dull blades. If you mow every weekend you will need to sharpen the blades possible twice in that growing season. Don't cut wet grass, it can spread grass diseases and it cuts unevenly. Avoid sharp turns if possible you can scalp the grass by doing this. Change mowing directions each time you mow. I know we are all creatures of habit but if you mow the grass a different way each time you actually help to keep the grass growing upright.

Now hop out into the garden and follow this lawn care diy advice to give your lawn a good boost. For more detailed information, have a look at the following lawn care ebook review page.

Compost Pail

Compost pails are one of the most neglected parts of the whole composting process, yet they are an integral piece and one that is visited quite often. A few simple considerations make their use more satisfactory to the kitchen user and the composter alike.

The pail may be of almost any description as long as it can hold kitchen scraps. Ideally, it will be large enough to hold at least a day's offerings and perhaps two. Any longer in the heat of summer or even the normal heat of kitchen preparations will most likely cause unwanted odors to be received. If the pail is to find a home on the floor or the counter, a decorative crock with a cover can be used, else any sort of bucket will do under the sink or another counter.

A few cautions, mostly common sense, make using the compost pail easy, effective and reasonably sanitary.

  • place only plant materials in the pail. Animal by products rapidly produce rancid odors and attract vermin to the compost pile.

  • line the bottom of the compost pail with three layers of paper towel or newsprint. It helps to absorb liquids and odors and will keep the pail smelling fresh.

  • empty the pail every two days or whenever it fills. Some occasions it may not be full after two days but it is best to empty it before rot progresses and smells develop.

  • if fruit flies become a problem use a cover on the pail and empty it more often.

  • wash the pail on a regular basis. Rinse with warm water and soap and wipe down with paper towels. The towels can be left in the pail to be composted.

  • regularly sterilize the pail. Wash it with a bit of bleach in water. This prevents harmful bacteria from getting a foot hold.

  • be nice to kitchen users, especially if this is the eating room. When preparing strong smelling foods, empty the pail immediately.

  • keep a pile of dry, brown material handy to the compost pile or bin to add when emptying the pail. This allows for easy measuring of composting materials and a well mixed pile.

Some people like to cover the compost pail. I have not found this necessary if it is maintained with common sense and emptied regularly. Rather, a cover is often a nuisance when the pail is under the sink and the cover has to clear the plumbing when being removed. Treat your compost pail with good sense and it will be a pleasurable tool in the composting effort.

Butterfly Jigs Create Buzz with American Fishermen

A big buzz within the fishing community that is spreading like wildfire is deep jigging with the new "butterfly" jig. Deep jigging has always been a very productive way of catching fish at all levels up and down the water column. Large heavy bucktail or nylon jigs were typically the angler's choice of tackle. The jig was allowed to fall to the bottom and then worked back up to the surface.

Recently, one of the leaders in cutting-edge fishing tackle, created a new series of metal jigs that have really taken vertical jigging to the next level. These jigs are widely known as the "butterfly" jig because of their distinctive flutter-like zigzag motion produced under the water. The jig moves this way because of the unique way the lure's edges are cut. Because of the sporadic movement and action produced by the "butterfly" jig, it entices fish to strike more often than traditional deep jigs.

What people may not know is that it is the entire fishing rig set-up that makes the "butterfly" jig so effective. In addition to the "butterfly" jig, anglers also need to have the correct action rod and reel and also use braided line. This style of fishing originated in Japan and was recently introduced to American anglers with great enthusiasm and success.

The "Butterfly" jig was most recently featured on ESPN2's number one fishing show, Spanish Fly, with Captain Jose Wejebe. Since the airing of the show, many intrigued fishermen are asking when the "butterfly" jig is going to be available in stores. Good news to anglers, it is coming very soon and they should check their local bait and tackle stores.

Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Happy Giddy Bug House

Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Happy Giddy Bug House Review

I got this for my son's 3rd birthday. He was thrilled with it. However he did not understand how to open the door, he thought it should flip down instead of rotate up. He broke it on the first day, and he is not known for breaking toys. I would recommend this, but just teach your little one how to work the door before he/she takes off with it! We also purchased the Melissa & Doug bag of bugs, magnifying glass and butterfly net and they make a great set.

Only Hearts Club Mystique the White Unicorn

Only Hearts Club Mystique the White Unicorn Review

All of the Only Hearts Club dolls and pets are wonderfully made and this Unicorn is no exception. It's very soft, and yet the legs are posable and it's able to stand on its own without falling over. The mane is silky and little girls will love to brush it. The only difference I found between the photo and the actual toy is that the braids and stars in the mane are a more pale yellow than pictured here, but that's no biggie - it's still a very pretty toy!

Only Hearts Club Mystique the White Unicorn Feature

  • They love playing together and traveling to imaginary places about which theyve dreamed!
  • Like the princess fairy, Mystique is a princess unicorn and wears a gold tiara, with butterflies on her braids.
  • She is a soft, fully pose-able unicorn, with a comb-able mane and tail!
  • Stands approximately 9.5 inches tall.
  • Size: 9" Doll
