Are You Tired of the Bull?

I have a few questions I'd like to ask you.

Warning: They WILL make you think.

They might even make you squirm a bit.

They'll also invite you to take a few more steps into your greatness.

Are you up for that?

Okay...here we go...

What would happen if you were pushed from the edge?

Would you fall?

Or would you fly?

What would you do if you found yourself faced with a charging bull?

Run?

Or be like the matador and dance around it?

What would you do if you fell into a deep darkness?

Would you just give up?

Or would you allow yourself to go through the whole metamorphosis and become the butterfly that you truly are?

What would you do if you found yourself in awkward, uncomfortable, unfamiliar and unpredictable situations?

Avoid them at all costs?

Or would you dive into them, realizing that those experiences are what you need to keep growing?

What would you do if you found yourself continually trying to steer and drive your car through the rear view mirror?

Would you just keep crashing into the same stuff over and over?

Or would you put your hands on the steering wheel and your foot on the accelerator and drive yourself into your utmost passion, purpose and prosperity?

Yes, what would you do??!!

Here's a couple more....

Do you brush your teeth everyday?

And use mental floss daily (yes, MENTAL floss!!) as well?

And do you know how to be like Teflon when you are surrounded by Velcro?

Or do you get sucked in by and entangled with the energy drains, emotional vampires and beauty robbers?

So...how did you do?

More importantly, did you get it?

If you want to truly live in your greatness, live in passion and live on purpose with power and prosperity, you have to know how to navigate in, around and through Life.

Right??!!

Want to start?

Great!

Start by saying, "I DO."

Yes...say "I DO" to You.

Say "I DO" to discovering a life in which you live according to your values and your priorities. NOT from what you think others would have you do.

Say "I DO" to finding your purpose and then living "on purpose" regardless of what that little gremlin in your head tries to tell you about it being "unrealistic."

And say "I DO" to creating AND maintaining the boundaries that will insure that you keep yourself
focused on the path of happiness, health and, oh yes, unlimited wealth.

Sound unreal?

Like "Pollyanna"?

Funny thing...I'm reading Pollyanna right now. Yes, the "kid's" book. It's not really just for kids. No....this was for parents as much or maybe even more.

Yes, sweet Pollyanna played the Glad Game. She always challenged herself to find something
she felt glad about.

This was after her mother died.

And after her father died.

And after she was sent to live with her cold and bitter aunt.

She always found something to be glad about.

Everyday...and many times everyday.

She truly discovered one of Lifes secrets.

So go ahead, have a little Pollyanna... all it will do is give you a more positive outlook.

And what that will do is change your attitude.

And all that will do is give you more gratitude.

And all that will do is change your latitude.

Latitude?

Yes, latitude. Change your thinking and you will change the way you look at everything and the way everything looks at you!

Want some help?

Take the time to first date and marry your self.

What??

Yes, I want you to first take the time to date and marry your self!

We need more greatness in the world and you can add to it by simply making the choice...start dating your self and then marry your self.

Good or good?!!

Want more?

Yes...I thought you might!

It's time to rock your soul.

It's time to dramatically extinguish the old beliefs and habits that have been holding you back from success.

It's time for YOU have the tools you've been looking for to live in YOUR highest level of passion, purpose and prosperity.

Why?

Because YOU are long overdue.

It's time for you to be delivered, directed and empowered to your Utmost and Highest Life.

YES...It's time!

Your life is awaiting you.

It's calling you.

I can hear it...do you?

You are being invited to fly like a beautiful butterfly.

You are being invited to say "YES" to your Life.

You are being invited to say "NO" to anything and everything that no longer serves you.

You are being invited into your Greatness.

Will YOU answer the call?

Don't hesitate...Be Greater than Great in 2008! Be Super Fine in 2009!

Get started NOW!

Mr Grizzly

The power and the strength of the Bear is as impressive to us today as it was to our oldest ancestors. In our bygone world powerful animals often represented the Sun, especially those animals that hibernated through the winter months. As the Sun declines they hibernate, the hours of daylight getting shorter each day, until it is reborn at the Winter Solstice, and these animals emerge from hibernation, renewed and gain strength each day.

Sadly the Bear is now extinct in Britain, but the strength of its spirit still remains alive. The Brown Bear died out in England in Scotland in the middle ages, and even earlier in Wales. There was never any evidence to suggest the Bear ever existed in Ireland at all during historical times.

They were hunted and persecuted out of existence. However, they were once very numerous and during Celtic times their skins were exported in large numbers from Scotland.

Bears are mostly vegetarian feeding mainly on nuts and berries as well as insects. However, after coming out of their hibernation in spring when food supplies are scarce they will sometimes attack a young boar or even a deer. A she-bear may produce up to twelve cubs during her lifetime.

Alpine grottoes and caves have been discovered dating back to 100,000 BC, that contain bear skulls and ceremonial hearths. We can imagine that to ancient people the bear caves represented the power of the invisible spirit world.

The Bear is one of the most revered animals in the world, and still even today thought to have enormous powers, they are able to hear sounds from great distances and able to remember.

When a bear is skinned they are said to resemble the same proportions as a man, and is human-like. They have always been identified with humans and the Tungus and Yakuts of Siberia called him Grandfather and in this land of great superstition it was believed that a man could turn into a bear if he crawled round a forest tree trunk three times, growling all the way.

The bears hibernation followed by emerging renewed in the spring, walking tall on its hind legs, has led to it being associated with regeneration and rebirth. Being regarded as a very mystical creature, our Celtic ancestors became cult worshippers, and the Celtic word for bear was arth or arthe, the Latin word is Artos and gives rise to the ancient name of Arthur. The legend of King Arthur sleeping in an underground cave until Britain needs him, recalls a bear in hibernation.

It seems likely that Arthur was originally a Sun god, and Arthur's underground sleep represented the rebirth of the Sun from the underworld of midwinter. In Gaelic tradition it is said that the Kean mathon (head of the bear) was one of the seven signs or names of star clusters engraved on the shield of King Arthur.

Male bears were sacred to the god Thor and the Celtic goddess Brighid is known as the daughter of the bear, and her spring festival of Imbolc follows the rebirth of the Sun in winter. Greek myth tells how the Great god Zeus, originally the Sun God was always looked after by two bears, who of course became Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. These constellations revolve around the Pole star the centre of the heavens. The Greek goddess Callisto was changed into the constellation of the Great bear and in myth became know as the nymph of Artemis and had two sons by Zeus. In a jealous rage Hera turned them into bears and Zeus turned them into constellations.

Bears were sacred to Artemis/Diana and at their Temple of Brauron just outside Athens, dances were performed by young girls dressed in yellow and called bears, these young maidens would then be rushed at by young men in a pre-marriage ritual as a mock hunt afterwards a goat would be sacrificed as a summer and winter solstice rite.

In Labrador when Eskimo's eat a bear's flesh this is a sacred feast and every morsel must be consumed and during this feast there is no talking only singing and drumming.

Bear - baiting continued in Britain until 1835, when it was outlawed. The Romans used bears in their arena's to perform and execute criminals and the sport of bear-baiting and indeed it was the Romans that introduced this cruel sport into Britain.

The Native American warriors would invoke tribal totems before going into battle and might have dressed in bearskins and go berserk calling upon the animals great spirit and courage to aid and possess them. In Native American teachings the bear is associated with the Dream Lodge, the inner space where the advice of the ancestors is sought.

It was once believed that when bear cubs were born formless and their mothers licked them into shape, hence the saying 'licked in shape'. In folk magic to wear a claw from a bear around the neck would take away the pain of childbirth, but in today's world the bear can still teach us many lessons, we learn that strength comes from within-not from what we own.

Think like a bear....he is connected to the earth and the spirit world; this is because he is at peace with himself. His movements are slow, sure and deliberate. He acts with purpose and in winter he enters his silent cave and emerges renewed in the spring.

You too can enter the stillness and seek and find the answers and strength to overcome problems and be the person you most want to be.

Betta Bowls - Should I Get a Bigger Betta Tank?

Betta bowls and pet stores go hand in hand. Fish stores can pack a lot of fish in a small area when they put them in these tiny betta bowls. But is this really a suitable betta tank? Think of it like this. How would you like to live in a ten foot by ten foot room with little air circulation, and no furniture, TV, computer, etc.? That is just how your fish feels. He can live in a small bowl, but his lifespan will be shortened, and he will never be all that he can be.

Betta bowls are often the only home a betta sees, because the person purchasing figures that the pet store must know what they are doing. "Why should I have to purchase a larger, more expensive betta tank when the professionals at the store house them in small round bowls?" you think. Well believe me, if they could get away with that with all their fish, they would.

The only reason all the fish in the store are in tanks instead of betta bowls is that most fish require water circulation to supply oxygen. Betta fish have a labyrinth organ in their head which allows them to exist in a habitat which has almost no air/water mixture. They can even survive an extended time out of the water entirely! Because of this ability, betta bowls end up being the way that the fish are housed, because it is the least expensive option possible.

Look at a betta the next time you see one in a tiny, cramped bowl. He is hardly moving, is dark in color, and looks lifeless. Now, watch one in a betta tank. If you do not know where to see one, go to YouTube and nose around until you see one in a nice five or 10 gallon betta tank. He is alert, his colors are more vivid, he appears healthier, he is interacting with his environment. He looks like a much more alive fish!

This is because he is more alive. The more stimuli you supply a betta fish, the more his personality grows. He will even start to recognize you as separate from other people. The experience he receives from his move to a bigger betta tank will actually help extend his lifespan, as well. In thanks for saving him from one of those tiny betta bowls, he will supply you with years of pleasure.

Washington DC for Families - Combine History with Fun in the Nation's Capitol

The Smithsonian museums are favorites for parents and kids of all ages (and parents love the free admission). The National Air & Space Museum (Independence Ave at 4th Street, SW) features the largest collection of air and spacecraft in the world. Favorite sights include the original Wright 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo 11 command module, and a lunar rock sample that visitors can touch. The IMAX theater and planetarium shows rival any blockbuster movie (most shows have a per person admission charge).

The Natural History Museum (10th Street & Constitution Ave. NW) is also a favorite with families. The museum features dinosaur, whale, and shark displays, as well as the legendary Hope Diamond. A new exhibit, Butterflies and Plants: Partners in Evolution will showcase live butterflies and plants in an enclosed pavilion (opening February 2008). The Discovery Room at the Natural History Museum is a hands-on room for families and students. The room features activities using real Museum objects and artifacts. Your kids can feel the skin of a crocodile or try on clothes from another country.

Enjoy learning about other cultures at the National Museum of the American Indian (Fourth Street & Independence Ave., S.W.), exhibiting Native American objects from ancient pre-Columbian civilizations through current times or the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum (1901 Fort Place, SE), focusing on African-American culture. The National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Avenue NW) features over 400 different species of animals from all over the world, with the giant pandas one of the most well-known exhibits.

At Arlington National Cemetery, take your kids to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (formally the Tomb of the Unknowns) for the changing of the guard which takes place every hour from November to March (every half hour during April-October). It is a definite memory-maker.

For budding artists, Washington DC is a smorgasbord of inspiration. The National Portrait Gallery (Eighth and F Streets, NW ) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (8th and F Streets N.W.) feature famous portraits and the largest collection of American art in the world. The Smithsonian Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (at the corner of Seventh Street SW and Independence Avenue) features modern and contemporary art. The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (950 Independence Avenue, SW) features contemporary and ancient art from Africa. The Smithsonian Freer Gallery (Jefferson Drive at 12th Street, SW) features a world-renowned collection of art from the East (Japan, Korea, China, South and Southeast Asia) and the Smithsonian Sackler Gallery (1050 Independence Avenue, SW) connected to the Freer, exhibits Chinese, ancient Near Eastern, and Asian art.

No one can resist watching real money being printed on the tour at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (14th & C Sts., SW).

What kid doesn't want to be a spy? The International Spy Museum (800 F Street, NW) is the first and only public museum in the USA solely dedicated to espionage and the only one in the world to provide a global perspective on this all-but-invisible profession. It features the largest collection of international spy-related artifacts ever placed on public display.

Everyone has their favorite monument in DC, and the Washington Monument (15th Street, SW) is a favorite of kids, probably because of the view. Take the elevator to the top of the memorial to our nation's first president, and enjoy the city's landmarks from a birds-eye view. Just north of the Washington Monument is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.

All of the sightseeing is bound to work up an appetite. Fortunately, Washington has a variety of family-friendly restaurants. ESPN Zone (555 12th St. NW) offers entertainment at the Sports Arena, with a variety of competitive games (and a menu that will please kids and parents). Hard Rock Café (999 E St. NW) is a great place for teens. The Food Court at Union Station (50 Massachusetts Avenue, NE) has more than 30 casual dining choices all in one place plus trains, shops and a movie theater. Fuddruckers (734 7th St NW or 1216 18th St NW) is the home of the make-your-own gourmet burger, plus chicken, soups, and salads. Old Glory BBQ (3139 M Street NW) is a casual Georgetown restaurant with a selection of barbecued ribs, pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, burgers and salads. The retro diner chain, Johnny Rockets (2000 Penn Galleria, 3131 M Street, NW, 1718 Connecticut Ave. NW) offers plenty of kid-friendly food in a fun atmosphere. Thomas Sweet (3214 P St. NW) was voted Best Ice Cream Parlor by locals.

Why Would You Choose to Grow an Italian Herb Garden?

Italian food is popular. Most home chefs prepare Italian cuisine without even really being aware of it. Dishes such as spaghetti, pizza and pesto are common. While a mixture of Italian herbs can be found on most grocery store shelves, using fresh herbs can take an ordinary dish from merely good to spectacular. To keep fresh herbs on hand, many people take the time to plant an Italian herb garden.

Italian herb gardens are designed to provide cooks with the herbs commonly found in Italian cuisine. Chives, chervil, sage, thyme and marjoram are all used when cooking Italian dishes, making them an excellent choice for use in your Italian herb garden.

Chives can be used in a variety of ways. Their delicate flavor pairs well with soups, casseroles, salads, butters and vinegars. Chives can be harvested once they reach a little over half an inch. Snip leaves near the soil working from the outside of the plant inward. Since chives do not store well, it is best to harvest as needed.

A relative of parsley, chervil is sometimes mistaken for it at first glance. However, the flavor is distinctly different. It is often used in fish and chicken dishes and in herb butters. When put into vinegar and allowed to steep, it will imbue it with delicious flavor. It is harvested as needed by snipping outside leaves and working your way in. Take care to harvest before leaves turn a purplish color. The concentration of flavor is greatly reduced once the leaves change color.

Aside from the most commonly known use as an ingredient in stuffing, sage is often used in Italian cooking to flavor meats and cheeses. It works well with rabbit, pork and poultry. Leaves can be pinched off when needed. Sage is most flavorful just as it is starting to bloom.

Thyme is one of the more delicately flavored Italian herbs. It is best suited to be used with mild flavored meats such as veal, but can stand up to more robust flavors as well. It does not do well in intense heat so it is commonly used in soups and slow cooking. For peak flavor, harvest thyme just as it begins to flower. Leaves can also be snipped whenever needed for a dish.

A close cousin of oregano, marjoram is sometimes used in place of oregano in Italian cuisine. It is often used in seafood sauces, salad dressings, soups and with poultry. To harvest, clip branches at the bottom set of leaves. Blooming has an effect on flavor. Early harvest well before blooms will result in a mild flavor while harvesting close to the begin of blooms gives you a more distinct flavor.

With these fresh herbs on hand, you will be able to take your cooking to a whole new level. Additional Italian herbs can also be added to your garden. Before long, you may be surprised when friends, family and neighbors are asking you how they can plant their own Italian herb garden.

How to Take Care of Bulbs During Winter

Removing dead flower heads means that a plant's energy is not wasted on the production of seed at the expense of increasing the size of the bulb. However, if you want to increase from seed you should allow the full cycle of growth to continue unabated. Many of the late winter bulbs and corms, including snowdrop, winter aconite, cyclamen and anemone blander, naturalize well by seed propagation.

Collect seeds from winter aconites in late winter and early spring, and sprinkle them where you want them to flower, either in special propagation boxes or direct on border soul or grass. Divide clumps of snowdrops and spring snowflakes and replant. Squirrels and mice might dig up newly planted bulbs. Snails might attack early daffodils, while birds might eat crocus flowers.

Now is the time to enjoy the flowers on many winter bulbs, such as the many different kinds of snowdrops. Novelist and all its relations, commonly known as spring snowflakes are also an early daffodil such as early sensation or January gold and February gold, and the early tulips. Enjoy the flowers on winter corms such as the dwarf iris, crocus, and also on tubers such as those of the winter aconites.

Agapanthus snowdrops multiply persistently where they are growing in damp woodland, and will eventually spread to carpet vast areas. Plant them under shrubs and enjoy a similar, if scaled down effect. Iris Pauline has dark violet flowers with distinctive white markings on the falls. This reticulate iris is sweetly scented. Plant the bulbs in an individual pot or with winter greenery in a hanging basket.

Blogging began not with the late 20th century and with the help of the modern technology called fast internet and computers, but it began as early as the Shakespearean times when one of the impressed spectators wrote the summaries of the scenes of different plays of Shakespeare in his diary. This is exactly what blogging means. You would have to put chunks of information about any event, dabble in the philosophies hidden within theories, and state your own opinions for others to read. And this is exactly what the blogging phenomena entail.

The ones who blog avidly use the term "last-in-first" to describe this phenomenon. This means to establish that whatever latest updates you put up the most recently, they will be displayed at the top part of the screen. Nowadays, blogging has become a worldwide phenomenon, and perhaps all for good reasons. It increases exposure and creates a sort of virtual identify for yourself in the net.

  • When you start blogging, you will find that there are various layouts that you can make use of. You can go for the motorbike theme where you have bikes and fire creating a very masculine combo, or you can lasso go for the garden with flowers and butterflies and everything green and sunny as your main theme. But if you have programming skills, you can create your own special and unique template too.

  • Blogging is highly interesting because it opens up a world where you can be yourself. Where you can post anything you like (within limits of course) and state anything you like on anything under the sun. You can criticize the government, bitch about your friends or talk garrulously about the experiences you have been through recently, and no one will stop you.

  • Blogging online had started when surfers decided to have a means of commenting on various websites about their serviced and products. It was at first difficult to do this, since they had to open up a separate website for this sole purpose. Now with many blogging sites, this feat has become very easy.

  • This is why blogging has made the word a smaller place to live in. You can always post comments on other people's blogs, and have them write back to you. Your friends and other visitors may also leave comments on your own blog, and say what they think of you.

  • Blogging is an interesting phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Here, you do not have to only post your articles and everything else in words. You can even put up pictures and videos too. These could be created by you, or sued form any other site, but they can be posted just the same.

  • Blogging is highly inspiring, since it really gets all your creative juices flowing, plus, it is an advantage for all those people who do not find your voice easily in the midst of a crowd during debates. If you find yourself uncomfortable while stating your opinions in front of others, because of the fear that they might fire back and shoo you away, blogging is the perfect solution. This will help you to state your thoughts in a clear and precise manner as you take the time to write, and at no time do you have to face anyone physically.

  • You can also keep yourself anonymous by not using your name in your blog at all, or by using pseudonym. This way, you can be what you exactly are without running fears of people discovering you!

So go ahead and blog your heart out. This is a truly marvelous experience, and once you master it, there is no looking back!

Legume Root Nodules

The symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacterium from legume nodules. Nitrogen fixation is mediated by two microbial systems: free living microbe like the other symbiotic forms like in the former type. The organisms produce thick walls, there by producing a dormant cyst that is resistant to drying and ultraviolet radiations. The latter type establishes a mutually beneficial association with the plant roots and produces nodules on infected roots.

A root nodule bacterium can be isolated from root nodules of leguminous plants by crushing the nodules and inoculating for hofer's alkaline medium which is specific for its isolation. Hofer's alkaline medium medium has the dye congo red which distinguishes organism cells from some colonies by adsorbing the dye.

Plants having will developed nodules were collected. The large pink nodules were separated from the roots and used for isolation of organism. The microorganisms on the surface of the nodules should be removed by surface sterilization with either 1%mercury chloride or 3-5%hydrogen peroxide were removed by washing the nodules in sterile water for several time. Then the nodules were transformed to the plates containing 70% ethyl alcohol for 3minutes and then washed with sterile water. Then nodules were crashed by using mortar and pestle. The dilution were plated using hofer's alkaline medium. The medium was allow to settle and plates were incubated at room temperature.

Nodules from the root of leguminous plant were collected. The nodules were washed with sterile water. The nodules were placed on a clean slide and crushed by pressing another slide over it. A thin smear was made by sliding the slides one over the other.Smear was allowed to dry and heat fixed. The smear was stained with ethylene blue for 30 seconds. The slides were washed with running water and air dry, the slide was observed for the presence of typical bacteria of various configuration.White, smooth colonies were observed.

12 Lou Reed berlin live Candy Says

Lou Reed Berlin Live at St. Anns Warehouse Berlin: Live At St. Ann's Warehouse is the audio release of Reed's 2006 performances of his classic Berlin album from 1973. Its release coincides with the Weinstein Company's DVD release of the Julian Schnabel film made from these performances, Lou Reed's Berlin. Upon the 1973 release of Berlin, Lou Reed's controversial successor to the wildly popular Transformer, Rolling Stone's Stephen Davis described it as one of "certain records so patently offensive that one wishes to take some kind of physical vengeance on the artists that perpetrate them...a distorted and degenerate demimonde of paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide." A earnest pan, yes, but also a fabulous pull quote. Thirty years later, the magazine named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Staging Berlin had been discussed for over 30 years, and in December of 2006 it became a reality, over four days at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. It was the first time Reed performed the album live. The New York Times said that Reed "wasn't revisiting these songs as oldies or artifacts; he was reinhabiting them...Berlin carried Reed's music to an ornate extreme, but now its trappings are secondary. What comes through is the way it feels." The film Berlin, by acclaimed painter-turned-director Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly), documents these historic performances. Though the album's harrowing ...

Buying Organic Compost

Are you starting a new organic garden, but you don't have a compost pile ready to use to amend your soil? You can now buy organic compost from most lawn and garden stores. But buyer beware. Buying the proper soil is tricky, especially if you have never had a compost pile of your own for comparison. Knowing a few things about what compost is and how it is created will help you in your search.

Compost is made of a combination of essentially four things: carbon, nitrogen, water, and oxygen. In the proper combinations, naturally occurring aerobic bacteria will break these sources down into what is commonly called compost. The process is deceptively simple. Mix your carbon and nitrogen sources, add water, and turn your pile regularly. After a certain amount of time, you end up with compost. Now that you know the basics of creating compost, here are a few things to look for when you purchase bagged compost.

Hopefully, there are samples of the different products available. Using basic gardening sense, and a little help from your nose and eyes, you can usually gauge the quality of the compost.

Fully processed compost should smell sweet, not like sulfur or ammonia. A bag that smells unhealthy probably is. Remember though, that some great additions to compost are manure and worm castings, and these smells are ok. Typically, darker colored, fine grained compost is better. This indicates a good mix of organic material and that the original wood chips, grass clippings, and other items have been processed thoroughly.

A light colored mixture may contain fillers, and your quality level will drop according to how much filler is added. Also check for the presence of earthworms. A healthy earthworm population in your purchased compost will translate into a great benefit for the plants in your garden, as earthworms naturally aerate the soil, break down larger materials, and leave you rich worm castings. Every organic gardener knows that the presence of these creatures is incredibly important for the success of your garden.

Remember that creating quality compost, either commercially or in your own backyard is a science. Composting requires several elemental materials in the proper amounts working together for the proper amount of time. If something seems off about a bag of compost, it could indicate an improper mix of materials, too much or too little water during processing, not enough mixing, or not enough time given to the bacteria and microbes to completely break down the individual parts.

Buying quality compost is an investment in your garden. One great thing about organic gardening is that every year your garden requires less and less input from you. After the first initial investment, you will probably have enough time to create your own compost for next season. Thus, the final thing you should consider is cost. After all, high grade compost is really worth the price.

Discover the Beauty of the Butterfly Koi Fish

Of  the all the Koi, the Butterfly Koi fish is perhaps the most beautiful. With it's long, flowing fins and magnificent colors it is both graceful and elegant. These fish have dorsal, ventral, pectoral and caudal fins that are long, flowing and almost featherlike in appearance.

This distinctive breed is described by the Japanese as "living jewels" and by the Chinese as "swimming flowers".

Besides being so beautiful, with their long flowing fins, this particular fish has been bred to be extemely hardy. Even hardier than the standard fin, they are able to withstand colder temperatures better as well. This is based on hybrid vigor or heterosis. The Butterfly Koi and Standard Koi can interbreed easily.

The breeding program of this elegant fish began in the United States in the early 1980s. A gentleman named Wyatt Lefever had obtained some beautiful and unusual long-finned hybrid Asian carp. He began a breeding program. He crossed the hybrid Asian Koi with metallic colored Koi resulting in the beautiful Butterfly Koi fish. These fish have been available in the United States for the past seven or eight years.

These beautiful fish are not the result of breeding goldfish with Koi as many people believe. While Koi and goldfish are closely related their offspring are very unattractive (at least compared to their colorful Koi and goldfish parents). They more resemble wild carp and have very little color.

The Butterfly derivation of the breed first originated in Japan in the mid 20th century due to an effort by the Japanese to increase the hardiness of the breed as a whole. The Japanese breeders bred Indonesian long-finned river carp with traditional Koi. The fish from this breeding, that later became known as the Butterfly Koi fish had longer fins, long barbells and pom pom nostrils. They was also hardier than the standard Koi.

The breed was known in Japan as "onagaoi" or "hire naga koi", which translated into English means "long tailed Koi". It was Randy Lefever, the son of Wyatt Lefever, who is credited with saying that they looked like butterflies. The Japanese sometimes refer to them as Dragon Koi.

Many people breed them for competition. Butterfly Koi fish can't be judged using the judging methods for standard Koi.

A couple of reasons that they can't be judged according the same criteria are conformation and the relation of the fin to the body.

The traditional ideal shape of the standard Koi has been set to be generously oval. In Butterfly Koi the shape is naturally more slender. This difference in the fish's conformation is amplified by the fact that judging is done by viewing the fish from above.

In "Nishikigoi" judging ("nishikigoi" means domesticated carp) the ratio of fin to body is an important scoring criteria. This elegant breed of Koi fish has a ratio that exceeds the standard by 500-1000%.

While body shape and fin length are different for both breeds, the judging criteria for color and pattern are the same.

Even though they have some different attributes than standard Koi you may find that you have an even greater appreciation for the beautiful Butterfly Koi fish.
