Mule Deer Near Lake Chelan, Washington

Each year in the lower elevations of Chelan County, Washington thousands of mule deer settle in for the winter seeking better opportunities for food and warmer temperatures. So, knowing that the wildlife habitat at the Preserve is ideal winter range, I packed up my camera last March and took a hike in the hills above Entiat, Washington to see if I could get a few shots off -- photographs, that is. As it happened, good photos weren't too hard to find -- there were mule deer almost everywhere I looked. In fact, from one particular vantage point I was able to count over 100 deer! I'm quite certain there were yet another hundred or more hiding within the various gullies and draws just out of my line of sight.

Personally, I find mule deer to be incredibly cute, what with their large ears that move independently -- like the "rabbit ears" of your grandfather's television set -- constantly resetting to pick up the best reception. They're similar in appearance to the ears of a mule, which is from where, of course, they get their name.

Mule deer usually hear you coming long before you've spotted them, which was pretty much the case for me. They gave me the "eye" for a bit, to see if I was a threat, then went back to grazing, albeit just a bit farther away. But try to get a little closer and they'll quickly move on over the next ridge with the largest buck taking one last look over his shoulder to make sure you're not following.

Characteristic, yet highly unusual gait, moving in a series of stiff-legged jumps and hops
with all four feet hitting the ground together.

As I rounded one corner, though, I startled a group of about a dozen. They took off in their characteristic, yet highly unusual gait, moving in a series of stiff-legged jumps and hops with all four feet hitting the ground together, their small white rumps and black-tipped, white drooping tails receding quickly over the next hill. Amazingly, mule deer can reach distances of over 8 yards with each "hop" using this peculiar, bounding leap and for a short while, they can reach speeds of up to 45 mph. These are definitely not the leisurely, graceful leaps of their close cousin, the white tail deer.

Late winter is actually a great time for mule deer watching. While in the summer they tend to "stay low" during the hot daylight hours, during the winter they come down from the higher elevations to escape the colder temperatures and deeper snow, where there is a better chance of finding food in their traditional "winter range" areas. During this time they seem to have a preference for the open hillsides and rocky slopes where they graze, which makes them easier to spot (although they do tend to blend in to the hillside rather well as you can see -- or can you? -- in the video). As the winter snow melts, they begin to move back to higher ground, thus most of the photos in the video were taken above the 2000' level.

I hope you enjoy these photos... the mule deer video's about 2 minutes long, and don't forget to turn your speakers on, there's a nice soundtrack, to boot.

Here's the link to the mule deer video.

Honey and Beekeepers

The rewards of beekeeping are that your honey bees will pollinate the neighborhood and you be able to enjoy the fresh sumptuous honey. What other hobby has such sweet rewards?

The old adage "as busy as a bee" is actually based on fact. Honey bees work flat-out bringing nectar back to the hive during the season. They work so hard that thy actually wear out their wings after 35 days, as they are no longer useful to the hive, they die

The bees can only collect nectar when there are flowers, so they make and store honey to feed the colony when there are no flowers in bloom. When conditions are good, the flowers produce a lot of nectar and the bees make more honey than they need. It is this extra honey that beekeepers collect for their own use or for sale.

Honey can be sold in two ways. Most people are familiar with liquid honey which has been extracted from the comb. To extract the honey a beekeeper generally uses a type of centrifuge equipment called an extractor.

You may not be as familiar with the other way of selling honey, which is honey still in the honeycomb. Honeycomb where the honey is still is the original wax is a specialty product preferred by customer who like food at its most natural. It's bit harder to use honey in the comb for anything other than eating straight out of the comb but it definitely has its own appeal.

Unlike supermarket honey which is a blended product from a vast number of apriaries. Honey from individual beekeepers comes if a huge variety of colors and flavors. This is because every flower has it's own scent and individual nectar with a distinct smell and taste.

Add to this the effects of the local climate and soils, and you end up with very individual honey. Honey made from the nectar of alfalfa that is gown in a dry alkaline soil is almost colorless.

In contrast honey produced from the nectar of buckwheat that is usually grown in acid type soils has a tendency to be very dark in color. The honey's color and taste is also affected by the way the bees make the honeycomb. With so many variables in play honey can range in color from pale almost colorless, through the all familiar gold to red and sometimes even a greenish tinge.

Remember to familiarize yourself with the regulations for labeling, processing and handling food products at both the state and federal level if you are selling your honey. The regulations will apply to both honey and any other bee products. Make sure that you follow any local beekeeping guidelines.

If you want to make a profit you need to treat your beekeeping like a real business. You will need to have a marketing strategy for selling your honey or any of many other bee products. Think about where you plan to sell the honey as well as the particular customer you will be targeting.

Beekeeping is an enjoyable and rewarding hobby. However if you plan on making a profit you need to think and plan like a business. Then your business will be a growing concern and not just a struggling hobby.

Want to know more about honey beekeepers? How you too can become a beekeeper and enjoy your own honey? Visit www.SecretBeekeepingTips.com and get the Free part Mini Course.

Celtic Mythology: 7 Ways to a Wonderful Life

In Corrogue, Celtic mythology helps me live a wonderful life.

As a storyteller, writer and Anam Cara (soul friend) I am blessed with the gift of taking the road less travelled. My companions on this road are people of magic and miracle. They are 'the beautiful people.' In Ireland we call them the Tuatha de Danaan. They teach many ways to live a wonderful life.

Let me count the ways. There are seven in all.

1. Celtic Mythology deepens the connection to the eternal

Many people today seek to find meaning in life through genealogy. A deeper connection is available by embracing the stories within your personal cultural heritage. All cultures have mythological stories that will connect you to the heart of your belonging. This connection is not only timely but it is also timeless.

2. Celtic Mythology honours the Divine

Ours is a society which is work obsessed. We have become a species that 'does' life rather than 'live' life. Real life includes the balance between the masculine and feminine. When these types of energy are in harmony, then life is wonderful. Celtic mythology deeply honours both the masculine and feminine and helps you experience this unity.

3. Celtic Mythology allows you to cross thresholds.

You live in two worlds and know only one. Celtic mythology allows you to enter the magical and miraculous world of the timeless. It allows you to journey in the world of the heart beyond past, present and future. It takes you placed beyond belief into the wonderful world of your creative imagination. You become the flow of creation.

4. Celtic Mythology embraces love of the body

In Celtic mythology there is a love of that which is sensual. It teaches one to honour the body and allows you to live a sensational life. This goes beyond common sense and embraces delight in sexual love and sensual love.

5. Celtic Mythology gets you out of your head

Most of the time we 'think about' living our lives. Celtic mythology reminds us that we are beings in nature. We are not simply logic shoppers who spend most of our lives thinking about the future and regretting the past. Celtic mythology invites you to embrace the moment and become a wondrous presence. It is in a sense totally illogical.

6. Celtic Mythology encourages you t to be a hero/ine

Celtic Mythology tells us we can be heroes even just for one day. We can learn to embrace our unique talents. We can journey in this world and learn to move beyond limitation. It shows us how we can learn to cross the thresholds of magic and mystery at the rising of each new day. We can enter dark places and become enlightened.

7. Celtic Mythology allows you to be you

Celtic Mythology embraces the beauty of words and the deep silence between words. The poet was honoured above all else. Theirs was the language that transformed. Theirs was the language that allowed you to see that the blessing is here and you are it.

Rainforest Plants - Sarsaparilla

Family: Smilacaceae

Genus: Smilax

Species: officinalis, aristolochiaefolia, glabra, febrifuga, ornata, regelii, japicanga

Common names: Sarsaparilla, salsaparrilha, khao yen, saparna, smilace, smilax, zarzaparilla

General Description: Sarsaparilla is a brambled, woody trailing vine that grows up to 50 m long. It often climbs high in the rainforest canopy. Birds feast on its small flowers and black, blue, or red berry-like fruits. The vines have long prickly stems and shiny leaves; they may be cultivated to form impenetrable thickets.

Location: Smilax, a member of the lily family, is native to tropical and temperate parts of the world and comprises about 350 species worldwide. It is native to South America, Jamaica, the Caribbean, Mexico, Honduras, and the West Indies. Many species of Smilax around the world share the name sarsaparilla; these are very similar in appearance, uses, and even chemical structure.

Uses: The primary uses of sarsaparilla include the flavoring of beverages and homeopathic medicine. Sarsaparilla is a name you'll probably recognize as it was once fermented to make root beer. Sarsaparilla remains the herbal ingredient in root beer today.

It has been difficult and confusing to determine with accuracy the medicinal properties of sarsaparilla since studies have been done with different species of sarsaparilla, including Smilax china, S. glabra, and S. ornata. Roots are used for medicinal purposes. They are reddish-brown, tuberous and may grow six to eight feet long. Sarsaparilla root was used as a general tonic by indigenous tribes in South America, where European traders found it and introduced it into their culture in the 1400s. This root has been used for centuries by the indigenous peoples of Central and South America for sexual impotence, rheumatism, skin ailments, and as a general tonic.
Sarsaparilla is an anti-inflammatory herbal remedy that is believed to ease rheumatism, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, including skin disorders. Sarsaparilla roots are odorless and fairly tasteless, and are generally considered safe if taken as prescribed. Sarsaparilla is however taken in conjunction and combination with various other herbs, and seldom alone.
It is now available in a variety of tablets, capsules and tincture products in many modern natural and health food stores.

Lost In A Butterfly Dream - Who Can Foresee The End, To The Endless Change Of Things?

The notion that reality is a dreamlike illusion has intrigued philosophers, poets, and thinkers of various
sorts...for millennia, ... at the very least.

In the Chinese tradition ideas about supernatural realities may be traced to its earliest days.

Archaeological evidence, for example, .... indicates that the oldest Chinese characters were found inscribed upon the scapulae of various animals in the ancient city at Anyang.

Buried in the graves of prominent people who have passed away, these bones were used in a complex series of ancient divination rites... that are some of man's oldest connections to the spirit world.

Ornamented with some of the most interesting inscriptions known to man, ... similar to, and in some cases even identical to modern Chinese characters, ... these bones were quite literally, broken... by a
small group of people... who were said to have a tremendous range of power.

Upon making slight hairline fractures on the surface of these remarkable bones, ... they were duly read, enabling ancient fortune-tellers to forecast and control daily events, ... often bringing insight into actions that were seldom understood... and exercising control over a whole host of people within their respective communities.

While these findings certainly provide important evidence about the scope and breadth of the earliest period of Chinese history, they also demonstrate the ancient origins of Chinese civilization... a period that allowed people to engage in some of the most exciting ventures into the great unknown.

Deciphering the Nature of Reality in the Early Chinese Netherworld

As supernatural matters have greatly influenced the ways in which people have perceived the world through various phases of history, ... ancient Chinese beliefs, by the sheer magnitude of the number of people who have been exposed to them, ....have undoubtedly been among the most influential beliefs
known to man.

As in many other ancient cultures, supernatural ideas were often closely tied to various tales about supernatural spirits, life after death, and other ideas that concerned the relationship between the material and spiritual world.

In ancient Chinese culture for example, the term "netherworld".... may be used to describe ancient beliefs that ghosts, and in particular, ... deceased ancestors, .... were often... viable spirit-like entities.

They come to earth to settle old unresolved scores... influencing not only the nature of daily experience... but also the times that lie ahead.

Ancient Conceptions of the "Supernatural" and the Evolution of the "Tao"

Arguably, a remnant of some of these early voyages to the great unknown, .... "Taoism", an ancient philosophy and religion... involves various precepts... that allow man to live in harmony with the supernatural elements that may impact his daily life.

As an ancient amalgamation of philosophy and religion, ... "Taoism" is a word that means, quite literally, ... "the way".

It includes a set of beliefs and a number of suggestions for daily living.

It also includes ideas that have both intrigued and confused those who have attempted to underscore its significance.

As an ancient form of thought, "Taoism" surfaced as a set of rituals practiced in temples scattered throughout each of the four corners of the Chinese nation.

Understanding the Roots of China's Ancient "Taoist" Tradition

While it is true that many Taoist beliefs and rituals were denounced during periods of political reform in the 20th century, the legacy of such a tradition can never be fully extinguished.

From a historical perspective the most important figure in Taoist thought is the ancient philosopher, Lao Zi.

Considered to be one of China's most important historical figures .... Lao Zi purportedly lived in the 6th century B.C.

He wrote the seminal text "the Tao Te Ching" .... a book that has had a lasting impact on how Taoist philosophy is construed.

Despite having written this work, he refused to detail many of his other ideas in writing, perhaps concerned that they might develop into dogma.

As compared to Confucian thought, a philosophy that has sometimes been described as dogmatic.... he did not prescribe a rigid code of conduct.

Instead he believed instinct, conscience and nature should be man's moral compass.

As a prescription for human happiness... Lao Zi encouraged his followers to listen and observe, ... develop intuition, build power, and promote love.

In short, ... he considered simplicity to be the way to truth and freedom.

Another Chinese Philosopher

The other famous philosopher associated with China's Taoist tradition is Zhuang Zi.

Zhuang Zi was purportedly born just before the onset of the 4th century B.C.

He is considered a great teacher and perhaps the greatest writer of prose during his time.

As a contemporary of Mencius, a legendary Confucian philosopher, Zhuang Zi was instrumental in expanding Taoist ideas beyond its original concepts.

As a visionary thinker, Zhuang Zi placed tremendous emphasis upon the natural harmony and spontaneity of the "Tao", ... the great importance of personal freedom, and the relativity of all things both past and present.

And in his personal life, ... it is said that Zhuang Zi often lived as a hermit.

In a simple, spiritual life .... he favored no will, no consciousness and no knowledge for the development of his true self.

In Memory of Zhuang Zi

A true genius who encouraged China's literati to examine perceptions about the nature of reality, ... his most famous work is simply titled "Zhuang Zi".

It is a time honored text that describes the author's beliefs about the nature of the good life.

However most scholars believe that this text is the product of several authors including some of Zhuang Zi's students.

As a creative, independent man, Zhuangzi became famous for elaborating upon the relativity of human experience.

Some people even argue that Zhuang Zi promoted a form of pluralism that is similar to some liberal ideas that exist in many parts of the West today.

In the story of the butterfly for instance, .... just one example of freedom that seems to come straight from the heavens, Zhuangzi writes,

One day around sunset, Zhuangzi fell asleep and dreamed he became a butterfly.

He flapped his wings and sure enough he was a butterfly ...

What a joyful feeling... he experienced as he fluttered about,

He completely forgot that he was Zhuangzi.

But soon he realized the proud butterfly was really Zhuangzi who dreamed he was a butterfly,

Or was it a butterfly who dreamed he was Zhuangzi?

Maybe Zhuangzi was the butterfly, ... and maybe the butterfly was Zhuangzi.

In a moment of inspiration, Zhuangzi also says, .....

Just look how happy the fish are swimming in the river.

Huizi: How do you know they are happy? You are not a fish.

Zhuangzi: And you are not me. How do you know I don't know the fish are happy?

Huizi: Of course I'm not you, and I don't know what you think; but I do know that you are not a fish, so
you couldn't possibly know the fish are happy.

Zhuangzi: Look when you asked me how I know the fish were happy, you already knew the fish were happy. I knew it from my feeling standing on the bridge.

Li Bai's response to Zhuangzi

Considering Li Bai's carefree spirit, it is not surprising that he was impressed by Zhuang Zi's free spirited philosophy.

In a salute to the great Taoist master, he writes,

In a dream ... Zhuangzi became a butterfly,

And upon waking ... the butterfly became Zhuangzi,

Which was real ... the butterfly or the man?

And who can foresee the end to the endless change of things?

The water that flows into the depth of a distant sea,

Returns again to the shallows of a transparent stream,

The man raising melons outside the green gate of the city,

Was once the prince of the East Hill.

So too must rank and riches vanish,

You know it.

Still you toil and toil.

For what?

Flying Butterflies and Happy Fish, - - - a good Comparison?

As Zhuangzi strolled upon a bridge called " Hao", ... reflecting upon the fish below, ... one could speculate about his state of mind.

One may guess .... that as the fish swam... in a pool below, .... feelings of happiness and freedom entered Zhuangzi's mind.

Perhaps they were thoughts that he hoped to experience again .... sometime soon.

A Surrealistic Trope and a Dark Delphic Dream

Considering Zhuangzi's disdain for rigid philosophy, it is indeed ironic that his Butterfly and Fish Stories have become, at least in certain respects, like scripture.

Perhaps their widespread, longstanding appeal comes from their ability to touch feelings at the heart of human consciousness.

How many people have not, ... at least in their wildest dreams, dreamt how it might feel ... to flutter across the sky.... or swim to the depths of a deep blue sea?

If we attempt to consider the mind that created such images, ... we just might find that Zhuangzi like our legendary poet ... attempts to appreciate all of the natural beauty that surrounds him.

For Zhuang Zi, life is a sensual experience... like a drop of dew...dripping...from a dark green blade.

As he creates images to experience another grand adventure ... in a life that has been more than full...

They... like gray old memories, will surely fade

Caught below the surface of a ruffled brow

Just above the orbits ... for a pair of eyes ... that will certainly struggle... to look back upon them.

The Elusive Butterfly of Happiness

Are You Chasing the Elusive Butterfly of Happiness?

For many people happiness is an elusive butterfly in the garden of life. Imagine a young child in the garden on a summer day. The child sees a beautiful butterfly flitting from flower to flower. With eyes of wonder the child wants to see it close up, touch it, and hold it in their hands. The child goes towards the flower that the butterfly is resting on, with arms out stretched, only to find as he just gets in reach, the butterfly moves to another flower. Undeterred the child follows the butterfly to the next flower, and then the next, but the butterfly always stays just out of reach.

As adults, happiness can seem just like that butterfly, always just out of reach. It becomes almost an obsession and the words "if only..." become an increasingly large part of our thoughts and vocabulary. If only I had more money I would be happy, if only I was in a great relationship I would be happy, if only I could have a different job..........and the list goes on. Even if we achieve one of our "if only" desires, the happiness we seek is still just out of our reach. The truth of the saying "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" becomes our focus and perception. If this becomes our focus, we find that dissatisfaction and unhappiness increasingly keep growing in our life and experience.

The unhappiness within us can not be completely satisfied by external events or circumstances. To find happiness in life we must first be at peace with ourselves internally. External events and circumstances can bring us happiness in the moment, but they do not have a lasting effect on our inner self. Life experience brings a mixture of good and bad circumstances to everyone. To rely on life's experiences for our source of happiness would mean living life in a constant emotional roller coaster ride.

Happiness comes from within. The inner contentment that survives the roller coaster ride of life has its roots deep within our being. The source of happiness comes from finding and embracing who we are as a person, and living a life of purpose. We need to find peace in every aspect of our life- the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. To discover acceptance, purpose and peace in all of these areas will give a sense of completion in life. If we neglect any one of these areas, we experience a sense of emptiness and feel something is missing. There is not a solid foundation for building happiness within, but we then, typically start to try to fill this incompleteness by looking for outside solutions. That is the point when we can fall into the 'elusive butterfly' syndrome, and experience such frustration.

Is happiness an elusive butterfly for you? Spend some time in quiet reflection. Are you neglecting one of the four important parts of who you are and experiencing a sense of emptiness within? The more you discover, embrace and accept your uniqueness and purpose, the more you will experience the butterfly of happiness alighting on your shoulder.

Photographing Our Beautiful Butterflies

What else do you know that can compare to the magnificent colors you see when you look through your camera lens at a butterfly? Maybe a butterfly sitting on a beautiful brilliant flower. It doesn't get any prettier than that. If you're lucky enough to have a garden with flowers that attract these winged beauties, and you're into photography, hopefully, you've been getting some great shots. But, if that doesn't describe your situation, you may find some of these tips helpful in getting started.

There are three great environments for photographing butterflies. The outdoors, garden settings, and butterfly farms or houses. People have been collecting butterflies for centuries. Catching them, killing them and displaying them on boards and in cases. Catching them on film is a great alternative. The butterfly gets to live and the pictures live on.

You don't have to have a lot of special equipment or a big, expensive camera to begin your butterfly photography. Actually, you may be spending a lot of time getting up and down off the ground to get those great shots. The smaller point and shoot camera and the convenience of a quality fanny pack camera bag would be just perfect for butterfly photography. You'll also need a good helping of patience and a lot of time. You can't go out and call butterflies. You can, however, set yourself up to have the best possible opportunity to find butterflies to photograph.

Butterflies are attracted to colors and scents. If your desire is to photograph butterflies in their natural habitat, you might go out a day or so ahead of time to locate an area that has the right conditions for butterfly photography. A couple good places to look would be fields that are loaded with wildflowers or areas of damp or moist soil. If you live in an area that is lush with forests, rivers, streams, and waterfalls look in those areas for some perfect shots of these magnificent creatures.

If you have a garden filled with flowers of purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange, and red, you should be able to go out your back door, set up your tripod, and wait for the butterflies to appear. Some of the most popular flowers for butterflies are alyssum, dahlias, honeysuckle, impatients, marigolds, petunias, sunflowers, candytuft, and zinnias. You can also help encourage them to your garden by putting out some over ripe fruit or nectar. Butterflies are attracted to the scent of rotting fruit.

Check your background before you're start your photo shoot. Ideally, try to situate yourself so that the background compliments the butterfly. Do your best to frame the shot to eliminate unwanted background items. Get as close to the subject as you possibly can, without scaring it away, so that the butterfly fills the picture. Another way to deal with unwanted background images is to set your camera to blur the background. Butterflies are attracted to flowers that are in the sun rather than the shade, so be positioned properly when taking your shots.

Have your camera bag packed and ready the day before, so you can head out early in the morning. Have extra film or memory cards, extra batteries, and a tripod. As with most photography, the best time to photograph butterflies is either early in the morning or late in the evening. Not only is the lighting best, but the butterflies won't be quite as active during these times of the day when it's cooler. It will give you a little more time to take the shot when the butterfly comes into view. Take as many pictures of the butterfly as you can before it flies away. Don't wait for what you think may be the perfect shot or you may not get a picture at all.

Butterfly Effect

A butterfly flapping wings in Asia might cause a tornado in South America; a little girl sneezing in Fiji might create a hurricane in Florida. It is called "Butterfly Effect" by Lorenz.

It sounds fantastic and unbelievable. Maybe we have to believe it, it happens at least in human's life if not in the nature. A tiny mischievousness causes a minor wrongdoing, a minor wrongdoing causes a big mistake, and a big mistake generates a disaster, until it is out of control, like an unstoppable chain reaction.

It can be called the law of cause-and-effect: any cause has an effect, it is inescapable. When there is a system error or a dysfunctional person, there is always a consequence to the discord. Someone is going to pay; worse, the result may be dumped onto the lap of the other person.

The conflict in the system or in people's heart will bring about a result as tragic as possible. In ancient time, there was a general, whose achievements, charm and prestige envied by two other high-rank officials. They worried the general would have more power and influence than them, so they schemed to ruin his reputation and had him killed. Soon after, riots broke out one after another beyond control, among which, two rebellion armies grew stronger and stronger; one rebellion army buried 300,000 soldiers alive once led by the general, which ever defeated fierce Huns and scared them to death. The kingdom collapsed, men killed and women raped, inevitably, the two official's family also were eliminated.

The human weakness, such as anger, envy, hatred, the impulse to destroy the good of others, can cause disastrous destruction. One wins, the other loses, for a long time, no one can be a real winner, and they all lose.

An ancient Chinese said: "Don't conduct a sin however insignificant it is; don't avoid doing a benefaction however petite it is." We can not predict what we do today will cause tomorrow. We had better be nice persons, say nice words and do good deeds.

Do You Know the Types of Lupus?

Sometimes, a lupus flare-up comes suddenly and without warning. You may see a butterfly rash over the bridge of your nose and swelling, or you may experience headaches, dizziness, a fever and pain in various locations. According to the Lupus Foundation, there are some things that you can do to prevent a flare-up.

Always take your prescribed medication, never miss a doctor's appointment (even if you feel fine), avoid sulfonomide drugs (typically used to treat bronchitis or urinary tract infections), decrease your exposure to sunlight and use sunscreen, get lots of rest and do not smoke. The good news is that 80-90% of the people with this condition can still live a normal life span, with treatment.

There are five types of lupus: systemic lupus erythematosus, which affects the joints and organs; discoid lupus, which affects the skin; sub-acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, which is characterized by skin lesions; drug-induced lupus that develops after a drug reaction; and neonatal lupus that affects newborns. Lupus signs include: fatigue, fever, weight loss/gain, joint pain/stiffness/swelling, butterfly rashes on the cheeks, skin lesions that worsen with sunlight, mouth sores, fingers and toes that turn white or blue in the cold, shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, easy bruising, anxiety, depression and/or memory loss.

The Lupus Foundation says there are no two cases of such a condition that are exactly alike. Signs may emerge gradually or come on suddenly, and can be mild or severe. Most people have "flare-ups" or episodes. To test for lupus, your doctor will ask you some questions, run a standard physical, take urine and blood samples and perform an electrocardiogram.

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) manifests itself as an inflammation, with rashes and scarring on the face, ears and scalp. The lesions may be inflamed, scaling or crusty in appearance, with the centers lighter and the rims darker. A small percentage of these patients have internal organ failure too, but usually symptoms are primarily skin-related.

Cortisone ointment or injections can be helpful in treating the flare-ups. Drugs like Plaquenil, Aralen, Imiquimod, Quinacrine, Accutane or Soriatane are sometimes prescribed but should be carefully monitored for side effects.

Dealing with this condition can be an emotional ordeal. Sometimes sufferers encounter depression, anxiety, fatigue and high levels of stress. Learn all you can about systemic lupus erythematosus to help yourself cope. Reading about new treatments and research being done can give you a sense of hope.

Be open with your family and friends about how you are feeling and let them know how they can help. Meditating, writing in a journal or simply making time for yourself through rituals or routines can make life more enjoyable as well. For sufferers of this condition, it's empowering to connect with others who are experiencing the same life events. You can check the Lupus Foundation or Arthritis Foundation websites for the nearest chapter.

Embrace the Butterfly and the Turtle and Live a Balanced Life

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

God often speaks to me and gets my attention through the use of symbols. My two symbols are the butterfly and the turtle. I didn't realize until recently how I must embrace both energies to live a balanced and fulfilling life. The turtle and the butterfly teach me many lessons and I am grateful for both. I believe we are all connected and can learn from one another.

For two days in a row, I put my turtle necklace on that my son gave me for Christmas. I didn't consciously plan it, but I wore two different butterfly shirts on both days. As I looked in the mirror admiring my necklace, my eyes immediately fell to the butterfly on my shirt and I had an "Ah" moment. I knew in my spirit that it wasn't a coincidence that the turtle was so close to the butterfly.

The turtle is grounded, connected to the earth and Spirit. It moves slowly, but steadily. It doesn't appear to be in a rush and is content with its progress. It doesn't have to be anywhere so it enjoys the journey and it trusts that it is exactly where it needs to be. It knows when to rest, be still and just be. The turtle is not afraid to just be and moves with confidence. It knows when to go in and protect and nourish itself. It also knows when to stick its head out into the world, take action and move. The turtle accepts "what is" and understands that having his head in or out are both essential parts of its journey.

How I want to be like the turtle and embrace its energy and wisdom. For me, sticking out my head may be moving in faith when I'm afraid and don't feel good enough or deserving. Or it may be speaking up and confronting someone when I don't want to. It may be just having fun and letting my passions run wild. Like the turtle, I go within and connect with God for wisdom, peace, and guidance. I know everything I need is inside of me.

The butterfly has freed itself from its cocoon after much struggle and strain. No longer is it a caterpillar crawling on the ground for others to step on. It's able to fly and soar in freedom. It goes where it wants to go bringing beauty and Love for all to see. It's free to do and be what it wants to be. Its wings flutter and it goes from tree to bush and back up into the sky.

I like to think of myself as a butterfly as I allow the wind and spirit to carry me wherever it wants to take me. It's called "going with the flow or in the flow." I am a butterfly when I use my gifts and talents for the good of all those around me. For many years, I struggled to set myself free from my own self-imposed cocoon of not believing and loving myself. My inner voice tried to stop me by telling me "You're not good enough or deserving enough." But my soul wanted to soar, and with the grace of God, I set myself free to become the woman God created me to be.

Like the turtle, I keep myself grounded through a daily spiritual practice of prayer and meditation so I can fly like the butterfly and spread Love and Joy to all around me. My spirit and wings are strong. I'm in the flow as I listen to what Spirit wants me to do and where it wants me to go. I no longer have to push myself or make things happen. I trust, rest, surrender, let go and let miracles find me.

To go higher and fly like the butterfly, I go deeper into my spirituality and just BE. I listen to that small still voice of God within and say YES to life and all it has to offer me.

The Sunflower and the Butterfly

The rain was pouring in sheets, and lightning struck the ground from the sky. It was November in Illinois, storm season. A fresh gust of wind from the North picked up a sunflower seed that lay on the road and carried it to the edge of a field. The sunflower seed fell on the ground and stayed there through the winter.

In the spring the farmer was planting corn and came across the first tender shoots. He rolled over them with his plow. "This no-good weed," he mumbled, "takes the soil away from good crops." Then he continued planting corn seeds.

The sunflower seed survived and kept growing. One day the farmer's son was playing in the field and came across the young plant. He said, "What is this stupid weed doing here?" He struck at it with a stick and tore off three leaves. But the sunflower continued to grow.

One day a butterfly was flying around in the cornfield and found the young plant. The sunflower asked the butterfly, "Why am I here? Everyone says I am no good and keeps trying to kill me. If I am no good, then why was I ever born?"

The butterfly hovered gently over the delicate leaves and said, "You are a sunflower. You are in a corn field. The people here think you're no good because they are growing corn, and they think that you are a weed. But a hundred yards from here, along the road, there are hundreds of sunflowers. They line the road and the drivers think they're very beautiful."

The sunflower asked, "Why am I here, where nobody wants me? Did other sunflowers hate me?" The butterfly swept her wings around and said, "You are lucky to be here. The other sunflowers get plucked and sold as food. Here, you could grow up. Count your blessings."

And the sunflower grew up to be as tall as the corn. When the farmer and his son saw it again, they marvelled at it. "It must be a sturdy plant," the farmer said, "to have grown this tall around here. We're not gonna touch it again." And they left it alone.

When August came, the sunflower was in full bloom and following the sun as it rose in the morning and went down at night. A butterfly came again and said, "See? Now you're all grown. Do you like yourself now?" "I don't know," said the sunflower. "You are beautiful," said the butterfly to the sunflower. "You are beautiful," said the sunflower to the butterfly. And the butterfly pollinated the sunflower.

One day the farmer's wife and daughter were walking in the field. The little girl said, "Look, it's a sunflower!" "Yes, dear," said her mother, "it's a sunflower. And it grew in a corn field even though your daddy tried to kill all the weeds. It must be a very special sunflower." "Let's pluck it for good luck," insisted the girl. "No dear," said her mother, "it must have been blessed to survive what it did. Kiss its leaves for good luck and then leave it alone."

The girl kissed the sunflower and then went home. Next morning the sunflower said to the butterfly, "I don't want to get plucked. I did not survive this long this far away from home that I should allow myself to be killed." The butterfly said to the sunflower, "Everyone dies, but if you rid your heart of darkness then you can live on in another form." "I need to repay the farmer's family for having raised me," said the sunflower, "and then I want to help other plants." So the butterfly said, "OK, then let them have your seeds and your petals, while you let your soul fly away with me."

The next night, while the mother was sleeping, the little girl went out into the field and plucked the sunflower. She put it in a vase. When next morning her mother found the sunflower in the little girl's room, she got angry. She said, "This plant survives storms, winter and your dad's plow, and you kill it. Are there not enough sunflowers along the road, that you had to kill something so precious?"

The girl cried and became afraid. She said to her mother, "I will be forgiven, right? I am a good girl, right?" The mother looked at her and said, "You have to ask for forgiveness, and you will have to pray."

The girl came up to the sunflower and said, "I am sorry." Then she prayed that the sunflower live on.

The next morning the farmer saw the sunflower in his daughter's room and said, "It is not by accident that this plant lived while we were trying to kill all the weeds. Perhaps it is trying to tell us something. I'll build a plot next to the corn fields where we'll be raising sunflowers." As he cracked the plant, he took out the seeds from it and put them in little bag to grow the next spring.

As he was plucking out the seeds, from the sunflower emerged a beautiful butterfly. She flew away and found her friend. And together they went on spreading blessings and knowledge to all the flowers that lived in the surrounding fields.

Butterfly Kits For School And Home

What exactly are butterfly kits and what do you do with them?

I guess most children want to 'grow their own butterflies' and I suspect a good many adults would like too as well (I'm putting my hand up in the air unashamedly at this point). Well butterfly kits, as they are called, are the easy way to do just that - allowing you to raise butterflies in your home or at school. You can raise a handful of butterflies in a small container and you don't need to be a biologist to do it. Nor do you need any special equipment. In fact all you need supply is some sugar - couldn't be easier!

Let's look at what you get in a butterfly kit.

There are a number of suppliers out there who provide butterfly kits, but in general, they are almost identical in what they provide:

- a housing of some sort

- a feeder

- caterpillars

- a pot of food

- instructions

The housing differs slightly between manufacturers. Sometimes it's a clear card and plastic container, sometimes a mesh of some sort. The actual construction is unimportant. What they all offer is a means of safely holding emerging butterflies and a clear view of what is inside.

The feeder can vary significantly between manufacturers. Sometimes it's a dropper or pipette, sometimes it's a cotton bud to hold liquid. Again, it's relatively unimportant what is provided as whatever it is, will suffice.

The caterpillars are not usually provided with the kit. You often get a coupon with which you can claim your caterpillars. The reason for this is to ensure you will be ready to receive the caterpillars and look after them. It's no good if you get the caterpillars delivered and then you go away for two weeks! So you can plan ahead and make sure you have a suitable period before ordering. You can specify dates to send the caterpillars from many suppliers.

The pot of food is self-explanatory, but to make a point, you do not need to provide anything else for the caterpillars. In fact anything else may be detrimental and may harm your livestock, so be warned.

There are full instructions provided with all kits, so you'll know exactly what to do and when.

What do you get out of a butterfly kit?

The kit will allow you to follow the life cycle of the butterfly, from caterpillar to chrysalis, from chrysalis to butterfly - all in the space of between three to five weeks. It's a fascinating trip and one that many children (yes, and adults) will enjoy and remember. You can in fact repeat the process as many times as you like between March and September which is the normal breeding season for the butterflies supplied. The Painted Lady butterfly is the most common butterfly supplied.

You don't need to buy new butterfly kits every time either. You can re-use the housing and just order new caterpillars so it's an economical exercise to repeat. Remember to release the butterflies after a few days of watching them. They will often reward you by staying in your garden for a few days especially if you have butterfly-loving plants. There is no ecological problem with releasing these butterflies into your area, they are very common and have no impact on the environment.

Don't worry if you don't have a garden or live in a built-up area. These butterflies can easily fly hundreds of miles or more to find food.

So there you have it, butterfly kits and their uses. I hope you enjoy using one as much as I did.

Make it fun using butterfly kits to raise butterflies at home or school. Amaze yourself, friends and family with things you find out. Find out what to do by visiting: Butterfly Kits website.

Flower Tattoos

For some strange reasons, I like designing flower tattoos more than others. Flower tattoos are mostly favored by women, they are like clothes accessories except that you can wear your tattoo to bed. It's like having a piece of art with you all the time. I find women with tattoos more appealing, sexier, more feminine and more powerful.

The image of a tattoo can be so captivating that it stirs up all our senses. You can have a Rose tattoo with a barbed wire around it and still look very good. It's Ying and Yang, loving and sweet but authoritative and intimidating. But if you are intending to ink a flower tattoo on your body, it's best to find out the meaning of the flower and what you want it to represent. You can then combine different images to give contrasting impressions of your tattoos.

I have compiled a list of meaning of flowers as a guide before you tattoo them on your body. I cannot vouch how official these meanings are, but my research has shown them to be fairly consistent. flower tattoos are permanent, so look around before deciding on one.

I'd Rather Die Than Give A Speech

It has many names; glossophobia, communication apprehension, stage fright, having butterflies in the stomach. It has several symptoms; a rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, a dryness in the mouth and unsteady hands. Most people are familiar with one recent poll or another showing that Americans rank fear of public speaking ahead of fear of death. Find something people are afraid of and you can sell a cure. Unfortunately, many "cures" out there are platitudes peddled by the snake oil salespeople of presentation training. They can actually increase apprehension as well as sabotage other aspects of the presentation. Here are the top five popular gimmicks for calming your nerves followed by three that actually work.

Imagine everyone in the room sitting in his or her underwear.

The results of your imagination could range from highly erotic to downright scary. One thing's for certain; your mind won't be on your presentation.

Pick a spot in the back of the room and focus only on it.

Your audience will wonder why you refuse to look at them. Eye contact is essential to create good rapport. Presenters who establish and maintain eye contact are perceived to be more honest and more persuasive.

A little bit of nervousness is good.

You've probably heard the saying "It's okay to have butterflies in your stomach. Just make sure they fly in formation." Enthusiasm, energy and excitement are good. Nervousness is bad. Nervous symptoms are easily recognized and rarely mistaken for energy. If you're speaking to a hostile or indifferent audience, a little bit of nervousness is like a little bit of blood around sharks; it only takes a little to start a feeding frenzy. In other words, swat those butterflies!

Use visual aids to channel your nervous energy.

Visuals should be used because they provide a visual reinforcement of your message, not because they provide an outlet for nervous movement. Presenters who use visuals to reduce their communication apprehension turn visual aids into visual distractions.

Memorize your speech, then recite it.

People who memorize tend to think of information as something stored up inside them waiting for release. When they start reciting, they want to dump it out as quickly as possible. Look up "recitation" in the dictionary and you'll find one meaning is "reading or repeating aloud." Would you want your presentation to be described as "reading or repeating aloud"?

"To conquer your fear, you have to focus on what caused it. Attack the cause and you diminish the condition."

What Works

Be prepared.

When you bring the requisite knowledge to your presentation, you have eliminated one of the major causes of apprehension. Do sufficient research to ensure you are the expert on your topic. Anticipate difficult questions and prepare responses. Another aspect of preparation is practice. You should have rehearsed your presentation three to five times before you deliver it before a live audience. Ask a friend or association to listen in and "red flag" any unfamiliar language or confusing statements. The fewer the surprises, the more in control you'll be.

Focus on the audience.

Research their needs, their knowledge level, their concerns and their motivations. Tailor your presentation to this unique audience, not some abstract conglomerate of people. Arrive early and mingle with individual audience members. Get to know a few of them. Ask them why they're attending the presentation and what they hope to gain from it. Refer to some of them by name during the presentation. Remove some of the anonymity and you'll also remove some of the apprehension.

Visualize success.

The perspective you bring to the situation frames your experience. Thoughts of failure often become self-fulfilling prophecies. Instead, picture yourself speaking confidently and accomplishing your purpose. Don't think about it simply as something to "get over with." Presentations provide excellent opportunities for business development and networking. When you have developed your presentation skills, you'll enjoy a competitive edge. Leadership development specialists, business coaches and performance experts all agree: Effective communication skills are essential to achieving growth in any profession. There's also no doubt that public speaking causes anxiety. You probably won't be able to eliminate it completely, but if you're sufficiently prepared, audience-focused and success-oriented, you'll be able to keep anxiety under control and your career on track.

Basic Psychotherapy for Teens - How to Build Your Personality

Your body is constantly changing, your mind is opening, and your life is starting to have its own shape. You are not a kid anymore, what is quite traumatic if you think about how easy everything was for you while you were only a kid. You didn't even need to wear your clothes... Mommy and daddy did everything for you.

Now this time is gone and you want to be an adult. If it were possible, you would simply jump to the future and live right now as an adult because you hate the limitations you have because your age doesn't allow you to be independent. You want to be an adult, not a teenager.

On the other hand though, it is cool to be a teen. Things are still very nice, besides some alterations in your body and in your mind.

They are nice, but also quite difficult to cope with. Everything at the same time...

Now you have to live alone, decide alone, build your personality, be someone... nothing is simple.

You look at this horrible world full of problems, wars, misery and terror that the grown ups had hidden from you and you feel you don't really want to live in such a place!

Where are the flowers? The animals and the trees? The river, the sky, the sun, the grass, the butterflies, the worms and the bees?...

The world has become a grey labyrinth.

How are you going to win this battle? What are you going to do? How are you going to get out of the hole and discover the rainbow?

Your personal philosophy of life is going to save you if you'll be very serious and cautious.

The first thing you have to learn in order to always find your way in your life is that you have to be sincere. This is something general that has to be applied in all fields. Do what you sincerely like and don't be afraid of the truth, but be very afraid of lies.

You have to be with the truth; otherwise, you'll have many psychological and many social problems in your adult life. Don't be an actor! Build your personality based on reality as it is, without trying to distort it.

There are many actors in our world. There are more actors than sincere human beings; that's why our world is this crazy place where some people kill and some people die, while the others are totally indifferent to what is happening to them.

You must be the one who sees what is wrong and cares about human suffering. You must be the one who sees the truth. Don't be a hypocrite who pretends not to see what is totally absurd and tries to hide this reality with several tricks.

Be very far away from tricks in your life! Be very far away from lies and from corruption! Be always sincere; live with the truth and for the truth.

This way you'll build a very strong personality and you are going to save many people in this sad world, many people that suffer very much.

You must build a better world, where everyone will have the basic conditions to live happily. By helping the others, you will be helping yourself.

Your psychological health depends on your sensitivity, sincerity with your social relationships, your objectivity and on the cleanliness of your character.

Always be truthful and don't be afraid of anything and anyone. The truth is a protection that keeps you connected with reality and doesn't let you get lost in absurd fantasies.

It doesn't let you be a victim of the wild conscience inherent in your psychic sphere. This wild conscience is totally violent and it wants to destroy your human conscience.

Dream decoding will also help you very much. This is a translation of the dream symbols, as we translate one language to another. The unconscious that is responsible for dreams provides you psychotherapy through dream messages.

You will have a big advantage if you'll start interpreting your dreams so early in your life. This way, you will avoid all the mistakes of your psychological type and completely develop your conscience.

Now you are using only a tiny part of it, because the biggest part of your conscience belongs to your wild and primitive side. It has to be transformed into a positive interactive part of your personality to help you live better instead of causing you several problems.

Learn how to interpret your dreams to develop all your capacities and be with the truth, to begin successfully your journey in life, so that you'll be always fine, without psychological problems, without remorse and without hate in your heart.

You'll have peace of mind and clear conscience, which will help you be balanced and wise, so that you may find authentic happiness in your life.
